Sometime after the 22nd of July 1804, Lawrence Shook purchased 100 acres of land from John Dumoulin in the "District Of Kaskaskia". This land had previously passed through the hands of John Edgar and Shadrack Bond, and was originaly the militia claim of Joseph Grondine in 1795. This tract of land was offficially given to Lawrence by the US Government on 20 July 1819 as Survey #600 Claim # 481, certificate #223, in Township 1 North (T1N), Range 8 West (R8W), and recorded in Volume 2, page 219. Sometime between 27 May, 1817 when Lawrence originally applied to the US Government, and 11 November 1822, this tract of land was transfered to Samuel Shook, Lawrence's son. This tract of land lies in St. Clair Township, on Richland Creek, probably within the limits of Belleville.

Lawrence also purchased the militia claim of Joseph Marie and Joseph Lalancet, which were 100 acres each. This land had passed through the same owners as the plot mentioned above. Lawrence gained unofficial title to the land from the US on 27 May 1817, and was granted official title to 200 acres on 20 July 1819. This tract is recorded as T1N,R8W, Survey 649, Claim 480, and recorded in Volume 2, page 220. It is noted that there are graves shown on Survey #649. These plots and the cemetery are aslo shown on a 1901 plat book map. Today, this cemetery lies under tha protion of th entry ramp heading West toward St. Louis, of the cloverleaf of Highway 460 and the Centerville Road. A distant relative worked on the interchange when it was built and knows that no burials were removed. He remembers seeing bones when they dug through that area. It is possible that Lawrence was one of the early burials in this cemetery.

through the same process, this time with the militia claim of Jacques Bartholomeu, Lawrence procured another 100 acres. He evidently purchased this land directly from Bartholomeu, made claim on 4 June 1817, and received official title on 20 Jluy 1819. This tract is recorded as Survey 746, Claim 2610, T1N, R8W and recorded in volume 2 page 218.
