Evidently Amos came to IL about 1798 with his uncle Samuel when a young boy. They first settled in the Turkey Hill settlement of William Scott, just south of what is now Belleville, Il. They settled about a mile from the home of William Scott, founder of the settlement. Came to Marion County Il early in the 19th century.
Married Sally Shelton in 1831 They lived in Mornore County IL in 1820, and are shown in census of that year with 5 makes over 21 years of age, and 4 others in the household. In 1840 they were living in Marion County . IL.

"Amos Shook had little chance to attend school, grew up in Centralia Township and was a farmer all his life, a leading Democrat in his community, but held no public office. He was a member of the Christian Church. He died in 1877, his wife passed to her rest in 1846. He was twice married, his second wife being Susan Witchurch of Centralia Township, the dauther of William Whitechurch, of St. Clair county Il, having been pioneers of that county.
