The Family of Susan Catherine Shook

Susan was born, according to the Allen family Bible on 15 June 1830 in Wiota, Lafayette County, Wisconsin. She married Erastus R. Allen on 1 January 1851. Erastus was born 24 November 1825 in Washington County Indiana, the son of Russell Allen (1795-18 Jul 1822) and Sarah “Sally” Ray. The marriage took place in Wiota, Wisconsin. Erastus and Susan probably accompanied Elias when they moved to the vicinity of Thompsontown, about 1885 and later Correctionville, Iowa. Erastus appeared as a witness in his father-in-laws trial in Correctionville in 1856. Erastus and Susan owned 40 acres ofland in the SW ¼ of section 34 on the west side and adjacent to the town of Correctionville. Zachariah Allen, the brother of Erastus, married Susans sister, Harriet, and owned 80 acres just to the west of Erastus. Two brothers married two sisters.
A family story states that Erastus and Susan ran a trading post on the Little Sioux River, southeast of Spirit Lake, Iowa. In 1857, when the Sioux massacred the white settlers in Spirit Lake, friendly Indians spared Erastus and Susan and stripped them of their belongings, and started the killing at the next hose ¼ mile away. We do know that Susan was very helpful when illness struck family or friends; she was a practical nurse; and willing to help whenever needed.
The family later lived in the vicinity of Sergeant’s Bluff Iowa, where Susan died 9 December 1889. Erastus died 16 December 1905 in Sioux City, Ia.,, and is buried in the Sergeant’s Bluff Cemetery with Susan. The burial plot contained 10 graves sites; Erastus and Susan are buried in the middle of the first row, with an infant daughter, Julia and V.J. buried on each side of them.
Little else is known about Erastus and Susan, except a news item from the Sioux City Journal for May 16-23 1856 quotes: “A young son of Erastus Allen, while fishing in the Big Muddy on Thursday morning last. Captured a catfish which exceeded any ideas we have ever had of fish since we first heard of Ohnah’s prospecting for “ile” in the interior of whaledom. The animal measured four feet nine inches long and fifteen inches through. He had a mouth sufficiently large to gobble two or three such boys as his captor. This lad was Charles W. Allen.”
