I have spent intermittent time over the past 5 years gathering info in an attempt to connect my known American family tree with ancestors and current relatives (if any) in Ireland. I have determined that a great-grandfather, James Brierty--born somewhere in Ireland in June 1838--emigrated to the U.S. in 1857. He died in July 1915 in Janesville, Wisconsin. I have traced his five children, including my grandfather, Michael James Brierty, who had four sons, including my father, Edward Francis Brierty. I have also located my various cousins--offspring of my father's brothers--and their children.
With this information established, it is obvious that other Briertys--located primarily on the Eastern seaboard--are not descendants of James Brierty. One likely explanation is that James did not emigrate alone, but was either accompanied by, preceded, or followed by a brother. A John Brierty is shown as a U.S. immigrant during the period 1846-1869 (exact year as yet unknown to me). Thus, I would like to determine the possible relationship of John to James and determine which of the current Eastern Briertys are his descendants.
I also know that a possible relative in Australia has established a family tree going back to a young man exiled to Australia as a criminal in 1807. We would both like to determine whether we had common ancestors in Ireland.
