Greetings Visitors!
I began this adventure for searching my family of Mitchell's and related families in the early 1990's. I have found in my search the best clues are records in the following: legal documents, selling or purchasing of land, taxes, town, church (baptismals, marriages, deaths) censuses, & war. I also found family names (first & middle) to be helpful. Town histories can be helpful, but, they need to be proven. It is my experience that they have been partially incorrect.
In the beginning, I found out that Arnold Hiram Mitchell, my Great Grandfather was a Civil War veteran. Civil War records were obtained from the National Archives. Arnold's record listed his parents as Ira Mitchell and Mary Clark and he was from Canada. Ira and Mary were found in Clarenceville, Quebec by baptismal records. Ira & Mary's baptismals listed their parents. Ira's parents were Oliver Mitchell & Elizabeth. Mary's parents were George Clark & Eleanor Miller.
Oliver Mitchell lived in Clarenceville, Quebec but wasn't born in Quebec. To find out were he was born and next the generation back I searched the 1880 Federal Census. Many of Oliver's children crossed into NY state to live. Two of Oliver's children listed different birth states for their father. I searched CT and NH and found NH was the correct birth state. The "History of Acworth, NH" had Oliver's family and while it has some incorrect information about my ancestors, it provided clues. I began searching in NH. The oldest ancestor I have found in the colonies to this date is John Mitchell from Hudson, NH. Acworth histories state that this line came from Northern Ireland. I have found no proof but, I believe it to be quite probable.
The search continues....
