My immediate family originate from Yorkshire and I have always wanted to know for how long my ancestors have been part of Yorkshire and decided to start researching my family history in January 2002.
My grandfather James Hale Bristowe was born in Barnsley, South Yorkshire (England) at the beginning of the 1900's and married Annie Rooke also of Barnsley. His father Harry Bristow was born in Wakefield in 1869 to parents who I have now found out, originate from Lincolnshire and were born in the 1840's.
George Clarke Bristow , my great great grandfather became a railway carrier in Morley, nr Leeds,Yorkshire (following a short stint as a farm labourer in Stanley, Wakefield) and married Ann Howard (from Beckingham, Lincs)in Sandal, Wakefield, Yorkshire in 1868. They are found in the 1881 census in Morley. Sadly Ann died in 1887 and on the 1891 census for Yorkshire I can only find his son Harry (my g grandfather)still in Morley. George was back in Lincolnshire in the 1901 census with 2 of his daughters, Alice Ann and Georgina, and he was living with a cousin.
My grandfather was a miner all his life and his father worked in coal mining though not a miner. It has been interesting therefore to look back and find that Bristow seems to be a fairly common name in Lincolnshire. George Clarke has been difficult to research and after moving back to Lincolnshire he died in Barnsley in 1925.
If anyone out there recognises any of this, particularly from Lincolnshire I would be happy to hear more. My gg grandparents were born in Walcot and Beckingham and their first child Emily was born in Beckingham.
I am particularly keen to research living relatives of this family line in Lincolnshire, particularly of the daughters who may have stayed in the Sleaford area.
