Ballentine and Cossler Family of Ohio

Updated July 24, 2001

About Our Family Research

THE FAMILY BALLENTINE
(Ballantine, Ballantyne, Ballentine, Balentine)
"A Scot who came from Ballindean (village by the hill) in Fifeshire; or from the lands of Bellenden in Roxburyshire."

The Ballentines/Ballentynes in our family tree came to the United States in the mid-1800's and settled in the Pennsylvania and Ohio area. John Ballentine/Ballentyne and his wife Agnes Lindsay emigrated to the U.S. from Glasgow, Scotland. Their daughter Jean married Henry James Cossler and settled in Youngstown, Ohio. Jean and Henry had 7 children: Agnes, Nell, John, Quintin, Andrew, Jean and Mary. Their house at 61 East Marion Ave. in Youngstown, OH, still stands.

I am currently researching the Lindsay/Ballentine roots in Scotland.

Surnames in our family include the following:
BALLENTINE/BALLENTYNE, BRADY, BRIGGS, CASSLER/COSSLER, CIRCLES/ZIRCLES, DECKER, LINDSAY/LINDSLEY, MCCARTY, MILLSOP, UMHOLTZ, YOUNG
