The Brodericks from County Cork, Ireland to Whiting, In USA

Updated September 6, 2011

About Our Family Research

My gr greatgrandfather was Martin Sr., born in County Cork, Ireland(1826-01/08/1901-USA). He was the son of Lawrence and Catherine Donahue, both born and died in Ireland. Martin Sr emigrated with wife Bridget O'Neil (1823) in the 1840's during the Irish famine. Martin Jr, was the 1st born in America, 1849 in Boston, Ma. Other siblings were James (1858) John (1861) Maria (1864) and Rosanna (1866).

IL 1870 census shows Martin Sr and family residing in Seneca, in
LaSalle Co, Brookfield tnship, farming 160 acres he owned, and
valued at $8000 plus personal property/inventory in 1901. The
family belonged to St. Patrick's Catholic Church and most of
the remaining members are buried at Mt. Calvary Cemetery in
Seneca. Bridget died in 1879; Martin Sr. married Ellen Condon
(04/07)of Seneca, by Rev. Donovan of the local parish. Ellen
died in 1905 in Mexico.

Military records show Martin, Jr, was a Civil War recruit, 64th Inf, Co D (03/05/1864-07/11/1865;verification can be made by
contacting NARA on the web, along with his military photo.

Martin Jr. married Kate Morrow: 02/13/1872 in Seneca. Children
were: Alice (1872-1875), John (187_ ), William F (1876-1956)
my grandfather, and Mary (1878); all were baptized at St. Patrick's in Seneca, IL., where records were verified.

Martin Jr. and Kate had other children born after the family
moved from Seneca (Frank, Nell and possibly two more unidentified) Around the 1880's, Martin Jr. moved the family to
Marion, IN, along with many other Seneca residents, to work in
a glass factory. We believe both grgrandparents are buried in
the Indianapolis area, and appreciate anyone who can verify
the cemetery, city and county in IN. Martin died in 1890.

My grandfather, William Frederick Sr., became a glass blower;
he married Emma Stouffer of Marion, (b. 1878 d.1932, IN) and by 1900, they moved to Whiting, IN, where their children were born/reared as follows:
Howard (1899?-03/15/60), Mary Magdalene (1900-42), Joseph (1904-1951), William F, Jr, my father, (09/06/1905-05/16/54), Robert (10/19/1907-12/13/73), James E (07/29/1909-5/22/72), George (07/24/1911-Sept 1972) Eugene (02/04/1914-10/1984) All were baptized at Sacred Heart Church in Whiting, IN. All the family remained/buried in the Calumet area. Numerous children, cousins and grand/grgrandchildren still remain in the area.

My father, William F. Jr, married Mattie D. Brown of Narrows, KY,
(08/15/08-01/26/72) in the 1920's. Their children are as follows: Elizabeth L (08/14/25-06/15/1999), William F (01/17/29-
05/20/2002), Norma J (04/02/33-01/2007?), Barbara F (03/24/35-1991?),George E (08/29/36) author of this page, and Joyce L (12/24/47).

No further research has been down going back to Lawrence Broderick of County Cork. There are many offspring of Martin, Sr,living in the Seneca/Joliet, IL area, as there were 5 children. Martin Sr was a man of some accomplished wealth; his estate
apparently went to his second wife, Ellen, who died in Mexico.
Martin Sr. is buried in Seneca, IL.; St. Patrick's Church and
the funeral home where he was buried is still operating in town.

Additions and or corrections are appreciated.
