Notes for Benjamin Fitzpatrick: Probably most notable of all Fitzpatricks of Southern states. He was 16 years in the US Senate from Georgia and was President Pro Tem of the Senate during the entire term of James Buchanan's administration(1857-1860). He was twice elected Governor of Alabama. He was nominated for Vice President by the Democratic Nation Convention of 1860. He declined. He resigned from the US Senate when Alabama seceded from the union in 1861
