Notes for Mary Williams: Mary, only had one eye. Family Legend has it that her father put her eye out while whipping her with a peach tree switch, when she was a little girl. Jane Huffman, (granddaughter) remembers Mary having several glass eyes. One of them fell out into the bathtub when Jane was a little girl bathing with other children.. They all screamed.. Mary Never let Edward Clay see his children. She used to chase him off with a frying pan when she caught him peering through the windows to catch a glimpse of his children. Edward Clay would bring money to the neighbors across the street to buy groceries for Mary. The neighbors could never tell Mary the groceries were from Ed. Mary died in a nursing home... ----------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------- Louise Webb (perhaps not her full name - the back of the infant photo identifies her as Ida Margy Louise Williams Webb, being held by Annette Williams Webb) was born to Benjamin Thomas Webb and Mary Williams in Rockwall County, Texas (a suburb of Dallas). Louise had two brothers that lived past infancy, Jim and Tom, both now deceased. Benjamin (who possibly went by Tom) was killed in a train accident in Rockwall County in October, 1907. Mary Williams Webb later remarried (Selby) and had additional children. For reasons yet unclear to me, the Webb children were put in an orphanage in Dallas some time after the second marriage. Jim and Tom ran away from the orphanage several times, eventually going to live with an aunt. Louise eventually returned home to the Williams-Selby house for some time prior to marrying Otto Vochoska and leaving home for good. Family legend has it that Benjamin was intentionally pushed in front of the train. I have some information that indicates that there was even a trial and execution of the man directly responsible, but I have no actual supporting evidence. Mary died in 1969 in Texas. Benjamin is buried in a Rockwall Cemetery, and I have a photo of his rather monumental headstone. Mary had a very strong work ethic and family legend has it that she learned her work ethic from a black woman that raised Mary in the Williams household after the death of Tapatha.
