Ambrose Jone's Pension FileAMBROSE JONE'S REVOLUTIONARY WAR PENSION FILE PENSION FILE: AMBROSE JONES Fineartte June 12, 1845 Dear Sir, I am requested to write to you by some of the heirs of Ambrose Jones who say that they are entitled to a considerable sum of money and perhaps some land, for the military services of Ambrose Jones. I can not at present get any satisfaction as to when or in what capacity Ambrose Jones served, but under- stand that he was a revolutionary soldier. His heirs represent to me that one of his children Polly Jones who is the principal legatee has appointed an attorney (w. Gardner Tanton I believe) to present the claims and to get all that is due, under the will of Am- brose Jones. The heirs intend to contest the payment of the money to Polly Jones and I request you not to pay over to Polly Jones or her attorney anything in right of Ambrose Jones until her right to it is established by a legal proceeding. The heirs are about instituting a suit for the pur- pose of trying the validity of the will of Am- brose Jones to pay the claim in question to Polly Jones. For the purpose of com- mencing these proceedings and describing the subject matter properly, I have to request you to furnish me a statement of what ser- vice Ambrose Jones rendered to the United States? What amount of money or land appear to be due to him or his heirs? Is the half pay of his widow payable to his heirs? (she died about a year since.) If you have the means of giving this information it will render great ser- vices to the heirs of Ambrose Jones and any costs attending it I will sent at a moments warning. And if these is as they represent a sum of money due and unpaid, you will please enter a caveat or have the payment of it stopped until it can be judicialy investigated. I am your most humble servant John Wilson Hon. P.L. Edwards Coms. of Pensions ----------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------- Note - 1778: Ambrose was with Washington at Valley Forge during the winter of 1778. Ambrose was one of early Baptist preachers ordained in 1811 and a member of South Fork Baptist Church at Malone, KY. 1817: Ambrose was exempt from further taxes. Note - Dates for this family were copied from Annie Walker Burns, Morgan Co., KY, Revolutionary War Records. Source: http://nickell.tierranet.com/craigcg.htm ----------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------- Most of my data on the Ambrose Jones family is from an article in aMorgan Co. county history book. The article gives complete birthdatesfor all of his children, but very few death dates, so it is likelythat the original sources include a family bible, though no mention is made of sources in the article. The article includes as one of his children "James b. 24 Oct 1801 whomarried Lucinda". Other researchers have followed the same source, and usually list Lucinda as the wife of James s/o Ambrose. However, the census data is more consistent with the James whose wife was named Lucinda being the son of William &Sarah Jones. See census notes for James William Jones for details. There is currently no evidence other than the aforementioned citationthat the Ambrose Jones clan is related to the James Wm Jones clan. ButI am keeping his descendents in my database to help keep me fromconfusing them with my Jones group. According to Veteran's Administration records, Ambrose enlisted in thearmy in Augusta Co., VA, in 1777, for three years service. He servedas a private in Capt. Thomas Bell's and Breckinridge's companies andin Col. Grayson's and Nathaniel Gist's 16th Regiment. He was promoted to Corporal in October 1778, andwas with Washington at Valley Forge during the winter of 1778. Hismilitary record shows that he was among the sick that winter. He wastaken prisoner at the siege of Charleston in 1780, escaped, and reached home 18 days before hisenlistment expired. He came to Kentucky from Greenbriar Co., VA, about 1788, and settledin Morgan Co at the mouth of Jones Creek, which is named after him. Hewas ordained as a Baptist minister in 1811, and was a member of theSouth Fork Baptist church in Malone, Morgan Co. He was one of the preachers who established the BurningSprings Association in 1813.
