Welcome to my page containing the history of my Bryan family and related lines. My direct surnames are Askew, Bryan, Cain, Dickinson, Fortner, Free, Gooch, Grizzle, Hart, Mayes, McKinley, Owsley, Turner, and Taylor, The counties I have researched in Georgia are: Franklin, Habersham, Lumpkin, Fannin, Greene and Hancock.
I began my search in 1992 when I began writing letters to my grandfather's living brothers and sisters. Through many letters and phone calls they remembered much info to get me started and that led me on my immediate research of my "BRYAN" line, which led me to the small mountain town in the North Georgia Mountains called Dahlonega, Georgia.
What I didn’t realize was that researching your family is an addiction. There were many times when supper was late, laundry not done, but yet I found time to do research. It has been rewarding to me in the discovery of the family that I never knew and learning all about their lives and where they came from.
Until I became interested in family history I never thought about my ancestors, although my mother tells me that when I was young I always asked where our family came from. Now I wish I had never given up that question as I grew up, as I would have had the opportunity to talk more to my grandparents on that issue and hear their family stories. I hope my work gives something to my children so they will always know their heritage.
This Bryan genealogy is as correct to my knowledge as possible. I have left my sources and notes included on my family sheets for interest and reference. Besides my research I have corresponded with many people to acquire my information here.
Please feel free to contact me if you would like to add to our Bryan History or if corrections need to be made. At present I am still working on additions to the Bryan Family History in search of our immigrant ancestor so we may cross the ocean and discover our “Roots” abroad.
If you discover a connection here, please contact me so we may share and add more history to our BRYAN lines.
