We are trying to link the Bryson family of Simcoe County, Ontario, Canada and also of Toronto to ancestors in Scotland, Ireland and possibly England.
Edward BRYSON (b.about 1800)married Catherine HATTAN January 27, 1827 at Southend, Argyllshire, Scotland. Edward was shown on the Register of Banns and Marriages as a servant from Carskey, near Southend, and Catherine was of Acharua, also nearby.
There were many other Hattan births and marriages in the vicinity of Campbeltown, Scotland at the time and I would like to establish their relationships to Catherine. No records have been located, yet, of any other Brysons in the region. So it is possible that Edward was a stray.
There was another Catherine Bryson in the household as well, possibly a sister to Edward. The 1871 census of Ontario showed this 'Aunt Kate' to be 15 years older than Edward, so she may have been an unmarried aunt, a younger sister to his Edward's father. Kate also migrated with the family to Canada. This suggests that Edward may in fact have had roots in the area after all. I have an extract from the Old Parochial Register of Campbeltown parish which says "Angus - lawful son of Edward Bryson, labourer and Catherine Hattan was born 17th and baptised 20th Jan 1833 Angus".
Sons Donald Hatton, Neill (Neil) and Angus, not sure which order, this is the current best guess. Estimated years of birth for Donald and Neill 1828 and 1831 respectively, therefore all three born in Scotland.
The family originally settled near Nobleton in King Twp., York County, Ontario, Canada about 1850 ("Brason" in 1851 Census)and laboured on farms in King, Tecumseth and W.Gwillimbury Townships, Simcoe County. Neill became a pumpmaker in Penville, Tecumseth Twp. while Angus appears to have been a labourer in various locations.
Donald married Rebecca WHITE in 1854. Rebecca believed born in England about 1836 of Irish parents William White and Elizabeth Long. Donald, aka Daniel, farmed as a tenant while raising a family of 8 children very close to the town of Bradford. He also owned some land in Bradford later.
Rebecca had sister Jane White (Jane BATES) born 1833 in Ireland, brother David L. White, and possible siblings Rachel White, James White, John White, and William White.
Some of Donald's sons later moved from farming into bakery operations in Barrie and elsewhere around Lake Simcoe c.1900 and the Bryson name was well known there for about two decades.
In 1886 Edward Albert Bryson (1853) married Margaret Ann BATES (b.about 1865, daughter of Jane White)and established himself in Toronto. He had about 8 children. Two, Herb and Roy, served overseas during WW1. We have not made contact with any of his descendants yet, nor those of brother James (married Elizabeth Harper - children Mabel and Frederick).
Another brother,William Bryson b.about 1860 apparently went to "St.Louis Missouri" in the late 1800s and was never heard from again.
Other West Gwillimbury names we are very interested in are ADAM GOODFELLOW (b.1785,lived at Bond Head, Ontario 1854, wife Jennett MCKENZIE, children John, James and Jessie Goodfellow, born 1818-1825, and the RANNIE (Rainey, Raney) family (Robert Rannie, wife Jessie Goodfellow, and children Janet,Agnes,Robert,William and Frank).
In Vaughan Twp.,Toronto, and Artemesia, BATES. In Vespra and Uxbridge, HOWARD.
Also interested in hearing from anyone who has recollections of, or information or photos related to the Bryson family of Barrie, Ontario in the 1890-1945 period. Or from anyone who knew my father E.M.Bryson (Mike Bryson)during his wartime service as a pilot in the RCAF.
