The PYBUS families of Jefferson and St. Clair Co. in AL

Updated February 7, 2004

About Our Family Research

I'm doing research on the James M. Pybus/Pybas family. James M.(b. 1818/19) married Charlotte BOLDING (b. 1822/23, daughter of Marvel and Sarah Steeleman BOLDING on April 9, 1842 in Jefferson Co., AL.

I found them on the 1850 Jefferson Co. census under PRYBAS, on the census, there was the following: James M. 31, Charlotte 26, Mary 17, Henry C. 8, Mary E. 5, Martha F. 3, James C. 2, Mary 52, and Polly 45.

I have the land records from 1853 and 1858 where James bought land in Jefferson Co.

I find them in the 1860 census for Jefferson Co. Truss Precinct. They are listed as PYBASS, J. M., Charlotte, Henry C. Elizabeth, Martha, Charlotte, Millie, Susan, Sarah and James.

In 1866 St. Clair Co., Martha F. married. and in 1879 there was a marriage in the home of James PYBUS.

By the 1880 census, Charlotte was listed as a widow. She was listed as PHYPUS, C. J. along with M. C., M. L. and Sarah D.

I have copies of the land records for both James and Charlotte.

I have reason to believe that James' parents were Henry and Mary Martin Pybus who were from Lincoln Co., TN prior to going to AL. Their son, Henry C. married Mary E. Carlile on Dec. 9, 1868 in Jefferson Co., AL. Henry C. and Mary E. had 4 known children, Martha V., Susan E., James M., and George C.

The Polly Pybus listed above, I'm assuming is the sister to James M. She married Samuel THOMPSON on Nov 19, 1850 in Jefferson Co., AL.

M. C. Pybus, the daughter of James and Charlotte married J. M. FULMER on Sept.9, 1883 in St. Clair Co., AL. Her sister, Mary married John WARNICK on July 13, 1851.

The Sarah listed as the daughter of James and Charlotte is my husband's great-grandmother. Her full name was Sarah Dulcene and was born about 1861, I am told in St. Clair Co., AL. She died Mar. 7, 1923 in Sparks, OK. She married James Abner SPRADLIN on Sept 2, 1883 in St. Clair Co., AL. To this union, seven children were born. Mary Frances, George, James Monroe, Emma M., Mattie, Henry Edward, and William Abner.

My research on this line is a work in progress, and I'd appreciate any info that may help me find more on James and Charlotte. I've found many variations of the spelling of this surname such as PYBUS, PYBAS, PYPUS, PIEBERS, PHYPUS, PYBASS, which makes my research a little complicated as you all can understand.
