I feel such an amateur at this but I am so enthralled by the history of my two family branches - the Wright's and the Gilmer's, that I just dive in. Thankfully my family is full of people who have done good research and provided me with textual scripts hundreds of pages documenting family from 1690 in Northern Scotland, to Northern Ireland, to Virginia and Kentucky. Many of my relatives have given me interviews and first hand knowledge. Happily, at least one side was a picture loving bunch. And being back here in Virginia makes research easier as I have found historic records, newspaper articles, wills, and census records for the public to browse in our libraries and online. The Scottish Society of Tidewater has yielded up some more MacFarlanes and Gilmores to investigate with. It's an irony that the farther we get from our ancestors, the closer we feel to them.
