About Our Family Research

Information for this family tree is compiled from the book HISTORY OF PITTSBURGH and ENVIRONS-Fleming (Volume V pages 100,02,03), from assorted family records and photos, from oral histories and from a variety of resources found on the internet. This is dedicated to my grandchildren Nathan and Katrina Erminio, with much love. Karen Bynum nee Storch

MY FATHER'S FAMILY

Johann Michael Storch was born about 1692 "im Gothischen" (from the land of the Gothic style) He was married to Elisabetha Krell January 1732. One of their sons was Johann Valentin who married Elisabetha Conradt. They bore the child Johannes in 1810.

Johannes Storch 1810-1867 (Munsterappel, Bavaria, Germany) was a stonecutter, quarry owner, and architect on an addition of the Gothic Cathedral in Cologne Germany. His son Valentine was a soldier and stonecutter who came to Pittsburgh PA in 1871.
Valentine is the father named in Val Storch and Sons, Inc. Cemetery Monuments -- Carrick, PA. Most of this family is buried in Zimmerman Cemetery in Brentwood, PA.

Karl Venter 1818-1898 (Roth Germany) was a farmer. He is the father of Elizabeth, married to Valentine Storch, Sr.

John (Johann) Spinneweber was in the boating and shipping business, hauling coal on Pittsburgh rivers. He is descended from Valrad Spinnenweber 1738-1784 & Eva Schmitt 1738-1815 (Urexweiler, Saarland, Preussen). He is the father of Cecelia, married to Valentine Storch, Jr.

John Spinneweber was the only sibling to drop the "n" in Spinnenweber. The 1880 Brownsville Rd. census lists some family members as Spinnaweber, (John's family and Andrew's).

The 1880 census shows the Paul Fallerts living with the John Spinnewebers.

MY MOTHER'S FAMILY

John Diel 1838 - 1913 was a grocery store owner in Pittsburgh. I have not been able to trace the roots of John Diel, beyond his father's name- John Diel, and his mother's name, Lena Dohlane (from John's death certificate), all of these born in Germany.

My grandfather George F. Diel, 1886 - 1950, was a ceramic tile setter in Pittsburgh. The family lived on Herron Ave. in Oakland, when I was a child. Some of the Diel family is buried in St. Michael's Cemetery in Mount Oliver.

Note: Olivio Erminio was a coal miner near Uniontown, PA

from HISTORY OF PGH. & ENVIRONS

The late Valentine Storch of Pittsburgh, won a permanent and highly honored position in the business world of Allegheny county through the successful development of a large and wide reaching interest in the field of Cemetery Memorial Art. Possessing talent of a high order, and exalted ideals, he gave to this branch of sculpture the distinction which has made his work of lasting value. Although more than a decade has passed since his decease, his work is still carried on by his sons, under the firm name of V. Storch’s Sons, Monumental Contractors, and the spirit, which inspired him, lives today.

Mr. Storch was a son of Johannas (their spell) Storch, who was born in Munsterappel, Bavaria, Germany, in 1810, and died there March 12, 1867. Johannas Storch, throughout his lifetime, was the owner of a fine quality stone quarry in Germany, and did contract work along various lines of construction, largely connected with the famous old structures of the region in which he was located. Among these was the "famous church" of Cologne, Germany, on which his son Valentine worked in connection with him. The Cologne Cathedral is esteemed one of the noblest specimens of Gothic art in all of Europe, founded in the reign of Charlemagne, in 814, the main part consecrated in 1322, additions made occasionally, the two towers not completed until 1880 and 500 feet high.

Johannas Storch married Karoline Scheid, who was born in Munsterappel, Bavaria, Germany, in 1810, and died there Aug. 13, 1871.
