This is the genealogy of the CODWEIS, CODWISE, CADDIS, CADDESS families as far as we have been able to gather them. My husband's family name changed from CODWISE to CADDIS in the late 1800's and another member of the family changed the spelling to CADDESS when they moved from Alabama to Texas.
The first member of this family was located in Pennsylvania in 1701. His name was Johann (aka Jan) Coonradt Codweis who became known as John Conrad Codwise. We thought that he was part of the Palatine movement in 1708-1710 but records have been found that he was here earlier than that. His son, Christopher, had sons that fought in the Revolutionary War. Codwise men fought and died on both sides of the Civil War. There are sons in the Caddis line who fought in World War II, Korea and Vietnam. There are still Caddis sons and daughters in the military today.
This is a work in progress and if you find that something is missing or dates and names are wrong, please feel free to contact me.
