John William Starkey (b. September 03, 1840, d. April 10, 1917)

John William Starkey (son of James V. Starkey and Charlotte Weekley) was born September 03, 1840 in Ohio, and died April 10, 1917 in Childs,Wetzel County,Wv.. He married Sarah Ann Barker on March 07, 1862 in Smithfield,Wetzel County,Wv, daughter of Joseph Barker and Sarah Shreves.

Notes for John William Starkey:
John was 5 feet, 8 inches tall, fair complexion, blue eyes, and dark gray
hair. He served as a private in Co. L, 6th Regiment of the WV Infantry
Volunteers. He was mustered into service 14 Oct 1861 at Cameron, WV and
mustered out 12 Nov 1864 as a Corporal.

Family tradition held that he owned several oil wells besides being a farmer
and was a wealthy man. He had a fault of liking to give oil wells away to
"ladies" he especially liked. His son-in-law, Neason Myers said to have gone
to Chicago to get him one time because J.W. had given away (or spent) all the
money he had with him and had no way to get back home. He and Sarah lived at
what is now Rt. 20, Folsom, WV. Before 1900 they moved to Childs, Wetzel
County, WV
