Carlson, Hultgren, Huseby & Otnes Family Trees of Minnesota

Updated March 5, 2003

About Our Family Research

I began collecting family information in 1979 with an interview of my parents. In addition to other interviews with family elders, I researched Minnesota Census Records, local cemetery records, and the library in Crystal Minnesota.

In 1984 we travelled to Norway and Sweden and visited relatives the ancestoral farms. Since the Internet has been available that is my primary source of information. My findings date back to the mid 1500's for the Huseby and Hultgren lines and the mid 1700's for the Carlson and Otnes lines.

As far as family reunions, the full Carlson family has not been together for about 20 years, however the decendants of Henry and Ida Carlson have an annual reunion that involves about 50 relatives. The responsibility for organizing these events usually rests with the Henry L. Carlson grandchildren.

We have attended a couple of Huseby Family Reunions that is also attended by several Otnes family members.

In 2002 we attended a Hultgren Family Reunion in Raymond Minnesota. There were about 50 people in attendance and a good time was had by all.

I welcome questions about any of the Carlson, Huseby, Hultgren or Otnes family trees. I am always looking for others who are interested in genealogy and I am willing to share research information.

My long range plan is to develop a book or possibly four books that would include all four ancestoral lines. These books will include family history, stories, pictures and ancestoral trees to be passed along to decendents.

  • Carlson Hultgren Huseby Otnes Family Trees (788 KB)
This Family Tree includes the four ancestoral lines (Grandparents) of Dennis Carlson. They emmigrated from Norway and Sweden in the 1800's and early 1900's. They came to Minnesota where the four families lived out their lives. Currently their decendants have spread over the entire U.S. but many remain here and 2 families continue to maintain the homesteaded farms.

Family Photos
  • Charlotte (Lottie) Andreasdotter Hultgren (28 KB)
Charlotte, (or Lottie) married John Hultgren in Sweden and Homesteaded in Mamre Township, Kandiyohi County, Minnesota in the late 1860's. Her brothers (Abel & N.G.) used the name Anderson and Abel moved to Seattle while N.G. lived in the Ortonville Minnesota area.
  • Ingabord Trebekk Hornseth (22 KB)
This is Ingabord Trebekk Hornseth, married to Johannes Otnes and had 12 children, one of which was my grandmother. With Ingabord are Henry and Ida (Huseby) Carlson. Very few pictures can be found of Ingabord, so if you have some please send a copy. She came to the US in 1908 with all of her children. Ingabord lived from 1861 to 1954 (93 years), the latter 40 years in Minnesota.
  • "HULT" Farmhouse in SWEDEN (80 KB)
This is a picture of the house the Hultgrens came from in Sweden. The picture was in Agnes Amanda's photo album. In 1984 I visited the same farmhouse with Henry L. Carlson. It was identifiable by a tree in the side yard and the window locations on the house. The house has been remodeled but some features remained the same. The residents could not speak english, therefore we could not determine if they were relatives.
  • John Peter and Christina (Nilsdotter) Carlson (16 KB)
John and Christina came to the US in the spring of 1883. They crossed the ocean with eight of their nine children. Hilda, their eldest, was 22 years old and married when they left Sweden. My Grandfather (Carl John Carlson) was 14-1/2 years old when the ship arrived at Quebec Canada.
  • "SILLERUDS" Kyrka (Church) in Sweden (57 KB)
This is the church that the Hultgren family attended in Sillerud Sweden. We visited the church in 1984 and it stands much like it did in the picture in the 19th century.
  • Johannes (John) and Elias Hultgren (35 KB)
John and Elias (brother) standing in front of John's Oakland car. Great Grandfather John, was married to Charlotte Andreasdotter and they had 11 children. Their homestead was northwest of Pennock, Minnesota. John and Elias first came to the US in May of 1867. They returned to Sweden and John arrived in the US a second time on July 4, 1868 with his family.
  • Johannes & Charlotta Hultgren children (73 KB)
These are 8 of the 11 children of Johannes and Charlotta Hultgren. The picture was taken in 1886 in Willmar Minnesota.
  • Carl John & Agnes Amanda Carlson (59 KB)
Carl John Carlson and Agnes Amanda Hultgren farmed northwest of Pennock on the homestead farm of John Peter Carlson. Carl and Agnes Carlson had 10 children, two of which passed away at a young age. Grandpa Carl lived with Henry and Ida Carlson in Spicer Minnesota during 1948-49 and in January 1950 he passed away.
  • Mr & Mrs John Hultgren (81 KB)
I believe this to be John and Lottie Hultgren's wedding picture, 1865. If so it would have been taken in Sweden since they didn't come to the US until 1868.
  • Katrina Bryngelson (29 KB)
Katrina Bryngelson lived from 1816 to 1914. She apparently came to the US in 1868 with her husband and son John. Katrina was a mid-wife and delivered the Carlson children inluding my father. My father new her as the old lady with wrinkles so deep you could place a dime in them and the dime would stay there on its own. Because the Hultgrens had taken a different name, her grandchildren didn't know she was their grandmother.
