I am just here to find information about ancestors and relatives. It would be fun to discover some unknown cousins.
To the best of my knowledge, my Casal grandfather (Nicolas Casal Garcia) arrived in Cuba from Galicia around 1910. He was a seaman as were his father (Jose) and his brother (Emiliano). He married my grandmother Carmen Trigo Justo, a widow with two sons, around 1920. There were no Casals or Trigos related to me in Cuba that I know of before the 1900's.
My mother's branch of the family had been in Cuba a little longer. My mother's paternal grandmother was born in Cuba around 1884. (She was 16 when her first son, my grandfather, was born.) As far as I know she was an only child. Her father was from Asturias, Spain and I believe her mother was also.
My great-grandmother's name was Elvira Rodriguez. I don't remember her other last name. Her husband (my great grandfather) was from Asturias. He came to Cuba with at least one brother who married late and had cousins of my grandfather who were closer in age to my mother. (Two of them were Ramon and Mercedita. Mercedita has children in their forties living in Florida but I don't know their names.)
My grandfather, Jose Fernandez Rodriguez was the only one of five children (Jose, Jesus, Ramon, Mercedes, Angel) to have any offspring. (All of them were born in Cuba and died in Cuba except Mercedes who died in Santo Domingo in 1986.) My grandfather married my grandmother Enriqueta Diaz Torres in 1921. She was the daughter of a Galician (I think) and a woman from Islas Canarias. Though my grandmother regarded herself as Cuban, she was born in Key West. Eventually most of the family except my grandmother settled in Tampa.
