About Our Family Research

Peggy (Polk) Cawthra, dau of Clifford P. Polk, son of George W. Polk, son of John Richard (Pook), son of George Pook, son of George Pook (or possibly Peock) of Sommerset, England with wife named Ann. George Pook was married to Susan Amelia Post of Mt Pleasant, NJ in Oshkosh, Wisconsin in mid 1800s and he was born in England. He was a ship captain on the Great Lakes.John Richard was born in Oshkosh, Wisconsin and lived in Spencer, Iowa, Shenandoah Iowa, and Culver City, Ca. where he died. He was married to Elizabeth Jane Runkle (in Spencer Iowa). George W. Polk was born in Spencer, Iowa and married Elsie Mary Payn of Solon, Iowa and they are both buried in Oshkosh, Nebr. Catholic Cemetery. Clifford P. Polk was born in Maryville, MO and married Grace Albee of Oshkosh, NE. I have most of the names and dates of all these people, but when George Pook died his wife had the last name changed legally, and I am not sure of the spelling before that time. The Oshkosh Wisc. paper reporting his death in July of 1865 spelled it Pook, but some relatives say it had an e in it and thought it might have been Peock when in England. I have been unable to find the George Pook from Sommerset, England but he was in the House of Lords in the mid 1800s to the best of my knowledge.

I have my mother's side of the family traced back to 1640 to Benjamin Albee in Boston, Mass. and to his father in possibly Sussex, England. I would like to further my research in all areas possible, but my main focus is the Polk (Pook) lineage.
