Notes for Marcus R. Peterson: [Steinfeldt from Sid.FTW]
The following is from the 1881 "The Stratford Courier Centennial Edition", a collection of reprinted material from an 1881 edition of the Stratfordite newspaper, reprinted in the Courier and the Stratford Courier newspapers from 1892 to 1958, plus the Stratford, Stanhope Observer published by Gene Gill in 1959 - 1960. The majority being from the Courier when Lael and Carl Peterson were the publishers.
1902 The South Marion Telephone Co. was organized. J. W. Swedlund was secretary and Peter Siemsen, treasurer. Directors were M. R. Peterson, J. W. Swedlund, Peter Siemsen, Henry Bertels, J. A. Carlson, Frank Peterson, A. W. Holstrum Alfred Erickson, and J. T. Drug.
July 1904 The telephone company (in Stratford) was originally owned by Dr. Chamberlain. Following the sale of stocks, it became known as the Independent Telephone Co. Now it seems that Dr. Chamberlain has declared bankruptcy and owes his creditors a very large amount of money, largely in small sums from local farmers. In order to curb their losses, the company has sold their stock to the Hamilton County Independent Telephone Co., out of Webster City. The new company lists 61 subscribers on the Stratford exchange, 118 on Stratford farm lines, 25 on East Marion lines, and 61 on the South Marion line. (In 1913, voters will ask to award the Stratford Franchise to South Marion or this company. South Marion will win. The two companies will merge and the name be changed to the Stratford Mutual Telephone Company.)
