The following is from the 1881 "The Stratford Courier Centennial Edition", a collection of reprinted material from an 1881 edition of the Stratfordite newspaper, reprinted in the Courier and the Stratford Courier newspapers from 1892 to 1958, plus the Stratford, Stanhope Observer published by Gene Gill in 1959 - 1960. The majority being from the Courier when Lael and Carl Peterson were the publishers.

1917
War declared April 6, 1917. Afterwards, there were numerous Red Cross and patriotic rallies and many enlisted. The first was George Peterson and Elmer Swanson. Edward Peterson was registrar for Marion Township and 134 men registered for the military service. A local Red Cross chapter was organized, Edward Peterson chairman, Mrs. E. H. Hawbaker vice chairman, M. A. Beach secretary, and Mrs. George Harmon treasurer. Mrs. C. D. Swanson was in charge of the sewing room, with ladies doing a lot of sewing and knitting for the soldiers. The Red Cross sale on March 30 started at 1:00 pm and lasted until 11:00 pm, and still not all of the articles were sold, and it had to be finished the following week. J. C. Ritchie was the auctioneer and $2,138.30 was made. In the fall, Axel Swedlund passed away in Camp Cody, New Mexico, the first of the enlisted men to pass away.

George's discharge document states, "This is to cerify that George W. Peterson 1266437 Corporal 17th Co. 3rd Regt. A. S. U. is honorably discharged." It states that he enlisted at the age of 22, had blue eyes, brown hair, fair complexion, was 5 feet 9 1/2 inches tall, and lists his occupation as a farmer. It is dated July 11, 1919.
