Following the death of his mother when he was three years old, Norman was raised by his grandparents Marcus and Esther Peterson. Their home was on the east side of Stratford. Norman lived in Des Moines, Iowa for 25 years and spent the last 11 years of his life in Florida. He managed a spa in Safety Harbor, Florida. Norman had been staying with his daughter, Carla, in Omaha, Nebraska after he became ill. He died in a hospital in Omaha.
