Notes for John Robertson (1) MCLEAN: [Mcleans.ged]
His mother was Margaret Robertson McLean who died in 1846, so there must be some mistake on his birthday of 1847, according to the death certificate he was about 75, making his birthday either 1844 or 1845, which agrees with most of the census records. When he left Nova Scotia he was thought to have gone to Wisconsin and worked in the lumber business near Chippewa Falls; (He worked awhile on the Chippewa River in Wisconsin near Chippewa Falls with a consign. RCM) Then to St James, Minnesota, as the first permanent settler; helped start the First Presbyterian Church in St James and other towns; a Merchant at St James, St Paul, and Springfield, Utah; family to St Paul 1888 (he was County Commisioner from 1879-1889); had a peach farm in Utah, was arrested over water rights, but case was postponed and settle out of court; (His son Edward went out to Utah, paid his fine, which John refused to do, and brought him home. EMK); given $1.00 in Father's will; buried in St James; church donated tombstone. (His name was spelled the Scotch way MacLean on coming to St. James he dropped the "a" in the MacLean, said it was simpler and shorter. RCM)[Mcleans.FTW]
