Charles was in the Navy approximately 10 years. He was married before briefly but no children were born from this marriage. He went into the service when he was 16 but fudged on his age in order to gain admittance. He was a baker by trade, just like his father. Even when in the Navy, he was cook and baker. He owned a bakery of his own for a short time in 1929 or 1930 in chicago on Courtland Street. He loved to play chess.
