Mary Pitt (nee Matcham) arrived in Australia fom England in December 1801 on the ship the "Canada". Five of Mary's children accompanied her - Susannah, Lucy, Thomas, Jemima and Hester.

Mary's husband, Robert, had died in 1787 and left her penniless, so on the advice of her cousin and benefactor George Matcham, Mary decided to take her family to Australia.

Mary and Robert's children married into the Faithfull, Wood, Laycock, Forrest, Jenkins and Wilshire families, and there are now six generations of Australian born descendants of Mary Matcham and Robert Pitt.
