My sister and I have been researching our paternal side of the family Choate. We have reached an impasse with Richard O Choate. His wife Isabella is buried in the Fairview Cemetery in Hawk Pt Missouri and on her headstone it states wife of Richard O. Choate. There is a marriage record for them in Lincoln Cty Mo for 1849. They had Moses b 1849 Bailey A born in 1857 Richard Samuel b 1862 and two daughters. He would be our great great grandfather. There used to be family reunions until about 1970. Frank Choate our grandfather was born in OFallon in 1904, his mother was Pearlie Choate (unmarried)daughter of Bailey A Choate and later married Clarence Moses who claimed Frank as his stepson in the 1920 census. This was a family secret and stayed so until the death of Pearlie Choate Moses at which time Uncle Clarence Moses revealed it to his children (verified by Nathan Moses son of Clarence and Pearlie) We grew up addressing Pearlie as Aunt Pearl when in actuality she was our grandmother. In those days it was considered shameful. In fact my grandfather is not listed in any census before 1920. In 1910 Pearlie is listed as still living at home and Frank would have been 6yrs old at that time. UPDATE: According to Nathan Moses, son of Clarence Moses, Schaeffer (spelling?) was the last name of Frank Choate's biological father. He may have died prior to Frank Choate's birth due to the fact that he and my grandmother visited the Schaefer family during the Choate reunion visits. This is just a thought. During that period, a child born out of wedlock was kept quiet as is this case due to him not being listed in the 1910 Census along with his mother. To visit the birth father's family would have been acceptable had the birth father died. Any information regarding this would be so appreciated. We now have confirmed from three family members that Pearl Choate Moses is indeed Frank Choate's biological mother.
