My grandfather was Jacob Nicholas, born April 10, 1877 in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He owned and operated J. Nicholas Moving Company. Jacob's father was Bastian Sintnicolaas, born in 1836 in the Netherlands. He served in the Dutch Dragonders before emigrating to the USA. His wife, Anna Roest, was also born in Grand Rapids on September 9, 1875. Her parents were John (b. 1834)and Celia (b.1839). The Roest family emigrated from the Netherlands to New York on April 17, 1`873 aboard the ship Maas. My mother, Geraldine Nicholas (b.1908) married Frank Chivers (b. 1911 and I am their son, David (b. 1939)
