I am a decendent of Franz Clewell, one of two brothers who were French Huguenots that came to the United States with their mother Louise Frache. Their father Francois Clavel was married in Auerbach to Louise Frache in 1718. He died in the year 1730 leaving a widow and two sons, Franz, aged ten and George Craft aged four years. The widow, Louise Clavel, nee Frache, was born in Geneva, Switzerland, on the 5th of December, 1695. Her parents were among the French Huguenots who were compelled to seek refuge in the Reformation period because the decree called the Edict of Nantes which had secured their religious freedom was revoked by King Louis XIV of France on October 18, 1685. About a year after the death of her husband, Francois Clavel, she married Johannes G'Fellern a native of Switzerland. They had one daughter who died in infancy. There is no further mention of this husband except that his name appear among the immigrants of the Billender Townshead which anchored in the Delaware at Philadelphia on October 5, 1737, from Amsterdam, Holland. My Grandfather Thomas B. Clewell was a member of the first reunion committee which met at the Schoeneck Church outside of Nazareth, Pennsylvania.
