I am researching the following New Zealand families (among others):
Clifton. The earliest confirmed NZ ancestor was William Foster CLIFTON, born in Napier, NZ on 12 August 1870. I am also tracing my grandmother's family, who came to NZ from London in 1869 on the ship ABDUL MEDJID, landing in Nelson. The family was of German origin, named BECKMAN or BECKMANN.
Knox. The earliest known member of this family was James KNOX. I believe he was born in Ireland in 1848 but have yet to confirm this.
Gatchell. The earliest known NZ member is Mark Charles GATCHELL, who arrived as crew on a whaler. His son - my great grandfather Nathaniel Henry GATCHELL, was born in South Tokomairiro, NZ, on 22 Feb 1866. Mark came to NZ from the New England area of the USA.
McIndoe. The earliest named NZ member is Robert McINDOE. He was born in Dumbarton, Scotland, in 1834. His father was also Robert (from Killearn, Scotland), his mother was Catherine Paton (from Kilpatrick, Dumbarton in Scotland). His daughter, Jane McIndoe, was born in West Taieri, NZ on 28 Aug 1870. She married Nathaniel Henry Gatchell and one of their daughters - Amelia Ellen Gatchell, is my Grandmother.
