The Lineage of the Cliftons Research on the Internet and in several genealogy sites could not trace this particular branch of the Cliftons any farther back than what appears here. According to Clifton “Family message boards” on the Internet, others have also been unsuccessful. One group attempts to connect the first Clifton listed below – George William – as one of the sons of William Clifton, the first attorney-general of Georgia, appointed by King George II of England. Given that this particular George Clifton served in the Revolutionary War in a Delaware regiment, it is more likely that this Clifton branch descends from Cliftons who originally lived in Delaware before moving to Georgia, then on into Alabama. Several people on the Internet stated their inability to find definite lineage information for the Delaware Clifton, but did state that there were quite a few people with that surname in Delaware from the earliest times of the nation’s history.
A definite work in progress!! Wanted something for the Cliftons to add to!!!
