My mother's side:
Her paternal great grandfather, David A Robinson b.7/20/1830 in Saratogo County, N Y d.October 22, 1907, Van Buren County, IA. David's parents were Benjamin & Eunice (Hunter) Robinson. In 1853 he came to Benton County, Iowa. The year of 1855 and 1856 were spent at his Ohio home. August 7, 1856 near Independence, Ohio, he was united in marriage to Nancy Margaret Hazlett, when they returned to his former Benton County home, remaining there for eleven years. They then moved to Van Buren County, Iowa, which has ever since been his home. Her father's maternal grandparents were John & Ellen (Claflin)Swires.

My mother's maternal ancesters were: William H Price b.1820 in Kentucky son of Elisha G & Jane (Harper) Price. The all died in Van Buren County, IA. I am not sure of the name Letty but have learned that over the internet. Elisha G Price and Jane Harper were married in Fleming Co. KY on 14 Oct 1819 or 6 Jan 1820. I have found two differnt sources.

Wm H married Gemima Harrell b.1827 in Indiana on May 21,1843 in Van Buren County, Iowa. Their families both lived in Van Buren County before the 1847 Iowa Census. Gemima was the daughter of Stephen Harrell, son of Jeremiah Harrell, who fought in the Revolutionay War.

Family Photos
  • Long-Barber Family in Straton, NE (209 KB)
My father's maternal great uncle, Isaac Barber; grandmother, Laura Barber-Long; grandfather, Loren Samuel (Sam) Long; father, William Long; & aunts, Nellie & Effie. A group from Illinois went by train to Hastings, Adams County, Nebraska and then on to the Holdrege area in Phelps County to begin homestead farming there but returned to Iowa. Nellie Louise, Loren Samuel, Minnie S, and Bessie M. were all born there. Effie was born at Arenzville, IL 9/11/1883. Nellie born 4/5/1885; William born 9/18/1889; Minnie born 3/20/1892; Bessie born 5/18/1896. All the younger children were born at their home in Nebraska.

Effie and Nellie Long are pictured here with the others. Their father, Loren Long and father's cousin, Isaac Barber are also in the picture.
  • The Longs in Henry County, Iowa around 1908-10. (165 KB)
I will soon have the names in here but I do know that Loren Samuel and Laura Barber Long with his sister Carrie and her husband William Elliott and their families are the main people in this family photo taken by Herbert Dyall, Mt Pleasant, IA.
  • John Swiers, my Great, Great Grandfather (112 KB)
He was an Englishman of Yorkshire birth where he first saw the light, March 26, 1829. When only three years of age, the Swiers family came to this country, bringing the little boy with them and settling in Ohio. This was in 1832. Ten years later the came to Iowa, and here John Swiers grew up and spent all but the last five years of his long life. Here he was married; here his children were born; here Sept 6, 1892, his wife, Ellen Chaplin (should be Claflin) died at the old home in Pittsburg. When age 76, he transferred his home to far-away Portland, where several of his children and a group of his neighbors had already gone. And there surrounded by kindred and friends, his strong, true soul passed quietly into the shadows, on the 21st of August,1910 to emerge as our faith teaches us to retrieve into the sunlight that makes glorious the shores of the “undiscovered country”.
