My name is Paul Colby. I'm trying to connect my family heritage. My Greatgrand parents were Jon & Matilda Colby (Johannes Kolppanen & Matilda Peltomaa)
John came to America in 1899 from Lohtaja, Vassa, Findland. Matilda Peltomaa came Ironwood Michigan, 1900, also from Lohtaja. She departed from the port of Hanko. Her Parents she left behind were Matts Mikkelss Peltomaa & Kaisa Jeremiadr, her last name is unknown. John & matilda married in 1901, in Ashland, WI. They had a son waino born in MI. They resided in Sanbourn, WI. They then built a house in Oulu, WI.
They had 10 children: Waino, william, Aili, Aina, Hilma, Edwin (my grandfether), Elmer, Elaine, Linda & Emil.
John had a half brother named Andrew Colby. He came to America in 1885. He married Minnie (Sweed & Fin), their children were Hjalmer, Florence and Elsie. They had a tavern in Iron River, WI.
Was John Colby dad's name Johannes Kolppanen, born on July 10, 1865 in Marinkainen, Lohtaja? Johannes Kolppanen's dad and mother were Thomas Herlevi, 10-4-1823 to 2-15-1867 & Elisabeth Kolppanen, 7-30-1832.
When, where, and why did they switch the name from Colby to Kolppanen?
I have been unable to find where John entered into the country or what ship or port he landed in.
Any information is much appreciated.
