We are starting to build this home page to include information about the De Tavora family of Northern Portugal, many of whom were executed in 1759 after the Portuguese Prime Minister (and dictator) the Marquis of Pombal had accused them of involvement in the Aveiro conspiracy to assassinate the King of Portugal. We believe that Antonio Luis, an infant grandson of the 3rd Marquis de Tavora was rescued when his parents and grandparents were executed, and later lived in Oporto having assumed the name of Fernandes. His son Jose Luis Fernandes emigrated to England and the British Fernandes family is descended from him. We hope to post material on this website over the coming months.
