Includes NotesNotes for Martha Alice Thirkell:
Martha is remembered as being an attractive and shapely woman in heryouth. In later years, she is fondly remembered as being a tough old bird with whom it was unwise to argue, fearing nobody and well able to look after herself. She was a great football fan and in her late 60's, long after the death of her husband and shortly after the death of her son Eddie, Martha would travel alone to professional football matches in Manchester and Sheffield. One of her nephews recalls with great amusement that even though he had previously been invited to tea at her home, he was greeted with "You won't get no b----y tea here" and had to hurriedly exit whilst skilfully avoiding vicious swipes of her dreaded umbrella. Earlier that day, he had scored the winning goal for Wetherby Athletic against her local team, Boroughbridge. As he says, "apparently blood was not thicker than Boroughbridge F.C.".
