About Our Family Research

On April 24, 1817. *John CLEGG (2) arrived in Sydney as one of 125 male prisoners on the convict vessel,"Shipley", to serve 7 years transportation. On November 2, 1818, he married Lucy MORGAN. Thomas was born on September 29, 1819, followed by Anne in (?)1820 (date not known). Then came Lucy on April 3, 1821, and Richard in (possibly) January, 1823. On March 21, 1824, Elizabeth (Betsy). Lucy then died of supposedly a 'fit' on February 9 or 11, 1825. John was tried for her murder on May 20, 1825, and found 'not guilty' for lack of evidence.
John then married Phoebe ANDERSON on June 25, 1825.To this union was born George William on October 26, 1826. Later Phoebe left John. The 1828 Census showed *John (1) Snr. living with John and *Mary ALFORD (who worked in his tavern), and their daughter Mary Ann (8 months) born March 8, 1828. Then followed a son *John, on either September 13 or August 15 1829, and Sarah on January 10, 1832. John died in a deep waterhole (? a well) on January 13, 1834. Mary Alford and her children went to live in the Kempsey District with John VERGE, (a 'gentleman' and respected architect from England).He was 13 years her senior. She had a family of ten to him and they married about 1848, following the earlier death of his first wife in England. Mary VERGE died on July 25, 1872, aged 63, with five of her children having predeceased her.
*John CLEGG (3)Jnr later married Elizabeth Jane CHRISTIAN from Brighton, England on June 2, 1857 at Austral Eden. They had a large family - Auburn, Eden, John (4), Elizabeth Jane, Henry Herman, Vida, Mildred, *Wilbert Morton on 29 June 1869, Annie A, Australia R, Eva Holly, Sibylla Maud, Gordon Vincent Wellington, Ina Irene Harriet, and Amber Evelyn.
*Wilbert Morton CLEGG (29) married *Matilda Jane BARBER (19) (born February 1, 1879) on February 21, 1898 at Macksville, NSW. To that union, two living children were born - Amber Matilda and *Earle Keith (born 5 July 1915). Two girls were stillborn. Earle Keith (known as Mick) married Kathleen Mary (Kit) BOWDEN (born October 2, 1919) on 4th March 1939. There were two girls born to this happy union: Janet Kay (known as Kay) September 25, 1939 and Amber Marina (known as Rene) November 9, 1942. Kay married Allan Owen EVANS on January 28, 1960. Two children were born - Garry Bruce on March 23, 1962 and Katherine Anne on August 5, 1963. Rene married Bernard Keith MILLISS and two sons were born: Paul Keith March 10, 1966 and Ian Bernard October 26, 1970.
