The Robert John COWAN (NZ) ancestry

Updated October 23, 2006

About Our Family Research

Robert John Cowan (b.1950) married Elaine Karen Kennedy (b.1953) on 30 October 1971 at Tauranga, New Zealand, and had two children: Ryan David Cowan (b.1972) and Devon John Cowan (b.1975). Research started in May 2005 to trace and record the ancestry of our family. We now live in Australia.

As each generation slips quietly by, it is so easy to lose the history of previous family members and the knowledge of personal events that should be recorded to pass on to future generations. We are therefore researching "The Cowan Story", which is our attempt to capture past moments in the history of the present Cowan generation, in order to give the future generations an insight on where they came from and who their ancestors really were.

On our journey of discovery we have discovered real stories of real people, some happy and some sad. We have also made contact with distant relatives previously unknown, but linked by common ancestry.

I cannot track my great-great grandfather Henry Cowan prior to his wedding on 22 November 1848. He was born in Scotland about 1817 and married Catherine Lochead (daughter of James Lochead) at St Pauls Church in Auckland. If anybody can help me there, I would be eternally grateful.

Other families arriving as immigrants to start a new life in New Zealand and linked to our family history are:

James Northcott and family, Plymouth (Cornwall) to New Plymouth(New Zealand) on the ship 'Timandra' in 1842

Richard Scandlyn and family, Plymouth (Cornwall) to New Plymouth (New Zealand) on the ship 'Essex' in 1842-1843

Charles Petch and family, Grimsby (England) to New Plymouth (New Zealand) on the ship 'Chile' in 1875

Names of particular interest to us in our research (in alphabetical order) are:

Adams, ex Castle Camps, Cambridgeshire, England
Cowan, ex somewhere in Scotland (links to MacDougall clan?)
Kennedy, ex somewhere in Scotland (links to MacKenzie clan?)
Hymas, ex Castle Camps, Cambridgeshire, England
Lochead (or Lochhead), ex Neilston, Renfrewshire, Scotland
McWilliams, ex Belfast, Northern Ireland
Northcott, ex Devon, Cornwall, England
Petch, ex Lincolnshire, England
Scandlyn, ex Crowan, Cornwall, England
Stevens, ex St Ives, Cornwall, England
Young, ex County Tipperary, Ireland

So - if you have landed on this page through searching for either Cowan, Lochead or Raynel families, or any of the other families listed above, I invite you to make contact with us.
