THE WORKMANS OF GREENBRIAR CO. OF WEST VIRGINIA

It seems that our Workman Family History information is fairly limited. Our Workman family moved to Arkansas/Oklahoma in approximately 1912 from Greenbriar Co. in West Virginia. The reasons for the move will be discussed as we learn more. Family memories seem to indicate that our Workmans came from the community of Cordoba in Greenbiar Co. We visited the area in 1999 and found Cordoba Road north of Lewisburg, WV. but it seems there is no town or community of Cordoba. We visited with a local resident on Cordoba RD and they stated that the last indication of Cordoba was an old schoolhouse that was washed out by floodwaters several years ago.
The decision to move to the area of Natural Dam Arkansas in 1912 was precipitated by an accidental killing in a bar in Greenbriar Co. Two of Thomas Workmans sons were involved in a fight and killing of a local man in a bar. In order to avoid arrest by the local sheriff Thomas Workman loaded his family on the train and headed west. Evidently the area around Fort Smith Arkansas reminded them much of West Virginia so they disembarked and settled in the area of Natural Dam, Arkansas. We are not sure if they had or knew family in the Arkansas area before moving or not.
