About Our Family Research

Research on the Crites and Auvil families is just beginning. Both families were early settlers in what is now Barbour County,
West Virginia. In the mid 1930s, (exact date confidential),
Hobert Lincoln Crites, son of Hiram Joseph Crites and Eva L.
Harvey, married Audra Marie Auvil, daughter of Rezin Edward Auvil
and Lora Ethel Stemple. This merger of families is where this
research begins. As matter of record, the five children of
Hobert and Audra Crites are still very much alive.
Reseach on the Crites side has led from Hiram Joseph Crites to
his father William Crites who was born in Hardy County, Va about
1823. The name of his father or mother are not yet known, but
believe that he is a descendant of Jacob Creutz, Phillip Creuts, Jr., and Phillip Creutz, Sr. who were born in Germany and came to
this country prior to 1780. Jane Adams was a daughter of David and Nancy Adams. Don't know Nancys'last name but David was the sone of Jonathan and Margaret Adams. Margarets last name also unkown. Eva L. Harvey was a daughter of Elam Harvey and Mahalah Simon. Elam was the son of James I Harvey and Ester Bean.
Mahalah Simon as a daughter of George Simon and Elizabeth Foy.
The Auvil side has led from Rezin Edward Auvil to his father Lewis Auvil who married Elizabeth Ann Morris, to Lewis Auvil, his
grandfather, who married Mary Moats. Mary was a daughter of
Tevalt Moats (Motes) and Hannah McDaniel. Elizabeth Ann Morris
was a daughter of D.S.Morris and Sarah, last name unknown.
Rezin Edward Auvil married Lora Ethel Stemple, daughter of Adam
Clark Stemple. Adam was a direct descendant of Godfrey, Jacob,
and Nicholas Stemple who came from Germany in 1732. Adam Clark
Stemple married Sarah Emily Miller who was a daughter of Jacob
Miller and Lacy Ann Hall of Taylor County. Lacy Ann Hall was a
daughter of Nathan Hall and Mary Means.
Reseach has centered on Barbour County, West Virginia so far.
The only family reunion that this writer remembers is a Miller
Family Reunion that was held in the Morgantown Area for several
years. Would be interested in knowing if it is still bing held.
I'm just starting with this research and have a long way to go.
