Kathy, his first wife, moved to Canada, after marrying a Canadian, and moved back to the UK after his death. She then lived on the Galton Village estate. (concrete jungle)
According to their marriage certificate, Joe was described as "Bachelor", which was incorrect. When I asked my mother (Evelyn) the reason for this, she said that Joe had never told anyone of his former marriage.
He was not what you could call a proper father. He seemed to feel that his 'job' stopped after he made mother pregnant. It was her job to look after the children and his to go and earn the money. He didn't play with us, or read/tell us stories, or help us with homework as a normal father would. He even lined us up and inspected us, like a platoon of troops, before we went out anywhere. I recall him returning home from work and running his fingers over shelves etc, to check for dust, making sure mother had done the cleaning properly. As children, we were sent to "Sunday School" every weekend, not because we were particularly religious, but just to get us out of the way. We also had to attend every Tuesday evening.
