Beginning research on my family tree to include the surnames McLaughlin(VA), and Hall(NC. Eventually to also include Christmas (NC), Andrews(NC), Christian(?), and Cox(VA)
My grandmother was the youngest grandchild and I was her youngest grandchild, and she wanted me to know about her family and so she shared stories and names of people who were long past when I was a child. One of her goals was to live to be older than her grandfather who died at age 92, and she did - she lived to be 96.
My grandmother was Olivia Mae McLaughlin b. 5 Aug 1889, d. 26 Jul 1986 married Thomas Stephen Hall (NC) b.18 Dec 1878, Orange Co. NC, and d. 30 Dec 1957 in Durham, North Carolina. Both are buried in Maplewood Cemetary, Durham, NC
My great-grandparents were John Richard McLaughlin,(Co C 44th Bn VA Inf. CSA; Civil War Veteran) b.20 Mar 1848, d. 24 Sept 1920, who was married to Rosa Belle Cox, b. 30 Mar 1850, d. 3 Feb 1920. They lived in the Ettick Virginia area and are buried in the Ettrick cemetery.
Their youngest daughter was Olivia, my grandmother.
John Richard's father was
McLaughlin, William (VA- Lunenburg Co?)

My grandfather Thomas Stephen Hall (Corporal, FIRST NORTH CAROLINA REGIMENT,COMPANY I Spanish American War)is the son of
Calvin (H.?) Hall, who lived in Orange Co/Durham Co NC, married to Mary Susan Mays,b. 2 Mar 1857, d.13 Dec 1932, who according to oral stories was reared by Gov. Graham? of NC
My more recent interest is in finding a relative who hopefully is still living. My uncle Thurlow Hall had a child John Allen Hall with his first wife Shirley Blackburn. When they divorced, my uncle had Johnny for awhile, and my grandmother took care of him. Custody changed and Johnny went to live with his mother, and our family saw little of him afterward, which broke my grandmothers heart. She always longed to see him again. In recent years my sister found something that belonged to Johnny that he would probably like to have. We know nothing of his whereabouts, but will continue to search. He may even go by a different name, as we believe that Shirley remarried. Anything sound familiar, then please email me.
