ISAIAH WHITMAN and HANNAH PLATT (BRUSH) were early settlers in the town of Wells, on the banks of the Sacandaga River, in Hamilton County, New York. They came with their family in September 1795 to a mountain wilderness, and worked with old friends and new to build this community. Their children married sons and daughters of other Wellstown families, and then they scattered to western destinations as new visions of hope and opportunity opened during the mid-1800's.
CHARLES TURNER and HEPSIBAH ROSE appeared in Wells by the census of 1800. Two of their daughters married Whitman sons. Their brothers and sisters soon moved on to western New York.
THOMAS BENTLEY and MINERVA PUTNAM were in Wells for only a short duration. Two of their daughters married and remained for a few years when their parents and siblings moved on to Pennsylvania and finally to Princeton, Green Lake County, Wisconsin.
GEORGE SIMONS and wife CATHERINE came to Wells between 1840 and 1850 from Albany. Many of their large family remained in the area as late as the turn of the 20th century.
I will share my research on the ancestral lines of these families. I am currently working to identify more of their descendants.
If you believe you are a descendant, please email me so we can compare notes and expand our information.
