Coons Family Tree-Climbing

I am primarily researching the Coons family, who migrated from New York State into the Coleman, Midland, Michigan, area prior to 1860. There may be a Canadian connection (Ontario), along with this. The name Coons itself is more Germanic, yet my dad told of his father's speaking a pidgen French with his sibs and a grandmother (Ida Thorington) who often read a French-language newspaper.
To date, I have information as far back as my g-g-g-grandfather, Jacob Coons, possible DOB c. 1790, and his wife, Margaret (Peggy) Pectel.
My grandfather, Ervin (Ervie) Coons (d. 1927), may have remarried after his divorce from my grandmother, Inez Drew Coons.
