THE DE BRITO'S IN CALIF/PORTUGAL

Updated November 9, 2000

About Our Family Research

MY GRANDFATHERS NAME WAS VICTOR DE BRITO, HE MARRIED THERESA GOMES, DE JESUS AROUND THE LATE 1800'S. I'VE BEEN TOLD HE WAS A WHALER IN HIS LATE TEENS,IN PORTUGAL. SUPPOSEDLY, HE WAS DRINKING WITH OTHERS ON THE SHIP. A FIGHT BROKE OUT AND HE BIT ANOTHER MANS EAR OFF. HE WAS AFRAID THE MAN WOULD KILL HIM SO HE JUMPED SHIP USING A ROUND TOP SMALL TRUNK TO KEEP HIM AFLOAT.
LATER WHEN HE MARRIED, HE AND HIS WIFE THERESA CAME TO MISSION SAN JOSE,CALIF.TO LIVE. THEY DIDN'T SPEAK ENGLISH. MY GRANDMOTHER GOT A JOB IN THE GRAPE FIELDS. ALL SHE HAD TO DO WAS LEARN HOW TO WRITE HER NAME ON THE FRUIT BOX. TOGETHER THEY HAD FOUR CHILDREN. LUCY MARY, EMILIA, CHARLES(MARCELINO), AND ROSALINE. ROSALINE WAS SHOT AND KILLED AT THE AGE OF 19, AND IS BURIED AT SAN JOSE CEMETARY. THE OTHERS LIVED THEIR WHOLE LIFE IN THE OAKLAND BAY AREA. I WOULD LIKE TO HEAR FROM ANYONE WHO MIGHT HAVE MORE INFO.
