The Dedells were of central New York State. Two brothers, Thomas and Lawrence lived in Utica, N.Y. Thomas had two daughters, Katherine and Elizabeth. Lawrence had four sons, Thomas, Richard, Lawrence, and Earl. No information is available regarding the Dedell brothers' parents, but it is believed that somewhere along the line the name was changed, perhaps from germanic name to more american, e.g. Von Dietel to Dietel, to Dedell. It is also believed that the brothers' mother was probably a Waterman and in some way related to or descended from the inventor of the fountain pen.
