About Our Family Research

Based largely on genealogical research by Marvin Widman, & the writings of Altha Haviland, this Lang family tree begins with the origins in Ireland of Alexander Lang & his wife Nancy Wilson. Their sons John,Alexander & William are believed to have been born in Ireland. John Lang married Nancy Ann Ewing in 1823 in County Ayr, Scotland. Their sons James, William, Matthew & John C. Lang are believed born in Scotland. Matthew was killed in the Sepoy Rebellion in India. William married Mary Ellen J. McDonald in Scotland in 1849 & then their first two children, Agnes & James Lang were born in Scotland. William, his wife Mary & their 2 children along with William's brothers James & John C. Lang & their parents John Lang & Nancy Ann Ewing & William's in-laws, the McDonalds, immigrated to Canada, about 1852 landing at Sherbrooke, Quebec & settling in Bruce Mines, Canada West (now Ontario). William & Mary's 3rd to 6th children: Mary, Fanny, Katherine, Martha, Margaret & John E. Lang were born in Bruce Mines, Canada West. About 1866 everyone immigrated to the USA except for one son, John C. Lang, who remained in Canada. He married Mary McRae in 1863 in Wellington Mines, Algoma County, Ontario. Everyone else went to Ohio where another of John and Nancy's sons, James, remained. James married Matilda Johnston in 1873. Leaving Ohio, the eldest son,William along with his wife, children & 2 additional children, Janet and William, (born in Ohio),parents & in-laws, settled in Iowa. Other related Lang names of research interest are: McRae,McLeod,Christie,Hay,Haviland,Cooper,Simpson,Dering, Nichols, Selder, Jackson & Nuttall.
