My mother's family were originaly Highlanders. The original name is MacDonald, but they were known as "The Red MacDonalds" They fought with Robert the Bruce against England to win Scottish freedom. Eventually they came to America & Canada. I hope someone can help make the connection from MacDonald to Mathews, my mother's maden name. I believe that Flora MacDonald was my Mother's ancestor. Flora helped Bonnie Prince Charlie escape from the British in 1745 after the Scots suffered a crushing defeat at Coloudin. Flora dressed Prince Charlie up as her Irish maid & smuggled him out of Scotland by night. She later immigrated to the New World.
