 Includes NotesNotes for Ray Townsend:
As told by Ed Denné III
"Pop" as we called my grandfather, created a gigantic vegetable garden east of the house at 6 Meadow Way after his retirement as Principal of Ossining High School. Indian Chief corn ruled and we ate everything fresh from the garden. When he retired, the school gave him a six horse Scott Outboard Motor. In those days, that was BIG. He would clamp it to the back of my Uncle Ernie's 16 foot row boat, everyone would pile in, and only an inch or two of freeboard would remain.

One day when I was 14, Pop let me back his Chevy down the narrow road to the boat landing at Three Mile Harbor to pull Ernie's boat onto land. Unfortunately, I wondered off the ruts and got stuck in the soft sand - Pop just laughed and we spent a few hours digging it out.

On April 1, 1961, I was almost 10, Pop handed the 22 cal Benjamin air rifle to me and I nailed a squirrel in one shot. We often went fishing, planted, harvested, sweated - great times. When Pop would get going on a subject, the family would say "Drink your coffee Pop" to get him back on track. He loved to listen to Mahalia Jackson records turned up as load as his stereo in those days would allow. He also amazed me by suddenly saying "It's time for the news" and turn on the radio and there it was, the news. Only many years later did I realize his radio was always tuned to 1010 all news radio New York!

We would watch "Stump the Stars" with Sebastien Cabet, "Lawrence Welk", "Candid Camera" with Allen Funt - it may have only been one station reception but the shows were great. Pop never wanted anyone to do genealogy research on his family - I'm not sure why to this day. Perhaps the "Stud Book" of East Hampton turned him off to the whole subject. Regardless, his is the history I hope to preserve.
