Ed Denné III: "Gam, as we grandchildren called her, often recited a poem in German. In an all too brief recording of her in the 1970's, she recited the poem in German and then translated as follows: "

A Little boy saw a rose
It was young and beautiful
And he ran quickly to look at it.

Little Rose, Little Rose, Little Rose Red
Little Rose on the Heather

The little boy said to the rose
'I'm going to pick you.'
The rose said 'If you pick me, I'll PRICK you!'

Little Rose, Little Rose, Little Rose Red
Little Rose on the Heather

But the little boy went ahead and broke it.
And the little rose pricked him.
All his weeping and wailing didn't help him any -- he had to grin and bear it.

Little Rose, Little Rose, Little Rose Red
Little Rose on the Heather"

Glimpses by Ed Denné III
Gam always had bird feeders aplenty outside the kitchen window and knew every type of bird that visited. She couldn't stand to have dog "favors" on the lawn - she would cover them with a coffee can until removed. Her turkey pie and Salle Lan, molasses cookies and root beer floats are matter of legend. We enjoyed Dugan's rolls every morning heated on the stove in a special pot - they were delivered to the house by the Dugan bread man.

One summer in the early '60's she fell en route down the drive past the barn to visit Aunt Ettie, a daily ritual, and broke her wrist. She earned the name "Gutsy" in her handling of this interruption. We often attended Guild Hall Theatre on Wednesday, and had sandy peanut butter sandwiches later in the week at the Main Beach. She had a washing machine that rolled to the kitchen sink, hooked to the faucet, and spun clothes at the end of the cycle. She continued to hang clothes out the back door of 6 Meadow Way into her 90's standing on the top step.

Gam had a place for everything and everything in its place - a rule that never varied and was oft quoted. She tolerated blue fish in the sink and clams in her best pot. I was fortunate to spend each summer growing up with her.
